Horseback Riding
Horseback Riding.
When we got to the farm, the first thing I noticed wasn’t the horses. it was the dogs. There were a lot of them just walking around like they owned the place. One of them kept following people and sniffing around the horses like it had a job to do. They were actually super friendly. I pet one while we were waiting, and honestly, I liked them more than the horses at first.
The horses weren’t saddled yet. A man came over and saddled mine for me while I stood there. My horse was brown, calm, and didn’t make a big deal out of anything. I didn’t know his name until after the ride. it was Sage. Kind of a quiet name for a quiet horse.
Before we even went, I had already watched a video on how to control a horse, so I had a general idea of what to do. And it actually helped. Sage listened. He didn’t stop or try to eat anything along the trail, and he stayed steady the whole time. I didn’t need anyone to walk beside me or guide the reins, which felt good.
My sister’s horse, Astro, was right in front of me the whole ride, and he kept stopping every few minutes to eat grass or leaves. Literally every time we passed a bush. My sister didn’t even try to stop him. she just let him eat like we were on a food tour. So the ride kept getting held up because Astro had snacks to attend to. I was behind them just waiting like can we go?
The trail was mostly shaded, with trees on both sides and dusty little hills. I also saw the buffalo bayou at some point. It was quiet, except for the horses walking and birds making random noises. My mom rode a horse behind me and looked like she was focusing hard, but she was fine. No one was scared really just trying to figure out what to do.
There were parts where we walked up a slope or turned sharply, but Sage didn’t act out at all. He just kept walking like this was his hundredth time doing the same exact loop. He probably didn’t care. I didn’t mind that either.
When the ride was over, we got off one by one, and that’s when my sister told me my horse’s name was Sage. I liked that. It fit cause of how he's just steady. And by then, I realized I actually liked him more than I thought I would.
So yeah. The ride wasn’t exciting or dramatic, but it was calm, and it felt good to do something outside for once. And I liked the dogs.
